At A&J Windowhaus, we provide impact window installation in Clearwater, FL for homeowners and builders who want hurricane protection without giving up the appearance of their property. Our family-owned company combines more than 30 years of European window manufacturing and installation experience with an understanding of Florida permitting and building requirements.
Living in Clearwater means enjoying the Florida coast, but it also means preparing your home for strong winds, wind-driven rain, and hurricane season. Impact windows provide a permanent layer of protection for vulnerable window openings without requiring homeowners to install shutters before every storm.
From the first measurements through permitting, installation, and inspection, our team manages the project in-house so there are fewer handoffs and fewer opportunities for details to get lost.
A good impact window project starts with the building, not with a catalog.
Window openings can vary considerably, particularly in older homes or properties that have been remodeled over time. Even openings that appear identical from inside may require different measurements, installation details, or design considerations.
We use precise laser measurements to establish the dimensions needed for each opening before the windows are ordered. That helps us provide a custom-fit solution instead of treating replacement windows as a one-size-fits-all product.
For Clearwater properties, we also consider factors such as the size and location of the opening, the selected window system, applicable design pressures, and the manufacturer’s approved installation method.
The goal is simple: the window needs to fit the property and be installed the way the approved system was designed to perform.

Impact-resistant glass is important, but the glass alone does not determine how a window performs during severe weather.
The frame, glazing system, anchors, fastener spacing, opening dimensions, surrounding structure, and installation method all play a role. Florida Product Approval documentation can specify allowable sizes, configurations, design pressures, installation requirements, and whether a product is approved for impact use inside or outside the HVHZ.
That is why simply asking whether a window contains “hurricane glass” does not tell the whole story.
We look at the complete window assembly and how it will be installed in the actual opening. For homeowners, this means the product decision is based on more than appearance. For builders, it means having clear product and installation information before the project reaches the inspection stage.

We handle the impact window project from measurement through final installation rather than passing different stages to unrelated subcontractors.
The process begins with the property and the openings being replaced. We measure carefully, review the project requirements, and discuss the window and door options that fit the home, design goals, and required performance.
Once the specifications are established, we prepare the information needed for permitting. The City of Clearwater requires permits for replacement windows and doors, and its published requirements call for product information such as manufacturer details and applicable Florida Product Approval numbers or NOAs. Plans must also identify the windows or doors being replaced.
Our team manages the permitting and inspection process as part of the project.
After the windows are ready, our in-house installers complete the installation. Keeping this work within our own team gives us greater control over measurements, scheduling, installation details, and communication.
You also have a single point of contact throughout the project rather than trying to coordinate separately with a salesperson, permit service, and installation subcontractor.
We provide expert hurricane impact window and door installation across the following places:
St. Petersburg
Tampa
Clearwater
Sarasota
Orlando
Miami
Jacksonville
Clearwater requires a permit when windows are replaced in existing wall openings. The city’s permitting information also states that licensed contractors submit window and door permit applications online and that required inspections must be completed before the permit can be finalized.
There is also an important distinction between Clearwater and South Florida.
Under the Florida Building Code, the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) consists specifically of Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Clearwater is not part of the HVHZ.
That does not mean product approvals or wind requirements can be ignored. It means the correct requirements need to be determined for the Clearwater property rather than automatically applying Miami-Dade or Broward standards to every project.
Some impact products are approved for both HVHZ and non-HVHZ use, while their installation documents establish specific limits for sizes, configurations, pressures, and installation methods.
Properties on barrier islands can also require additional information. Clearwater’s window and door permit requirements state that buildings on barrier islands must provide component and cladding pressure calculations and indicate the window’s distance from exterior building corners.
These details are one reason proper product selection should happen before windows are ordered.

A&J Windowhaus started with window-making expertise developed in Berlin, Germany, and today we bring that same focus on measurement, fit, and installation detail to Florida properties.
For us, European-style design and Florida hurricane protection do not have to be competing priorities.
Homeowners may want stronger storm protection while still caring about sightlines, appearance, operation, and how new windows fit the architecture of the home. Builders may be balancing design specifications with product approvals, permitting requirements, schedules, and inspection readiness.
We approach both situations by treating the window as part of the building rather than simply another product to install.
That attention becomes especially important on custom openings, larger window configurations, older properties, and projects where several window or door types need to work together visually.

Both impact-rated systems and approved hurricane shutters can protect glazed openings, but they require different approaches.
Shutters generally need to be deployed before a storm. Impact windows remain in place as part of the home, so the opening has protection without a separate installation step each time severe weather approaches.
For some homeowners, that convenience is a major reason to replace older windows with impact-rated products. Impact windows can also preserve the normal appearance and use of the windows between storms.
The right decision still depends on the property, existing openings, budget, project scope, and long-term plans for the home. We prefer to evaluate those factors rather than assume one solution is automatically right for every property.

A: Yes. The City of Clearwater lists replacement of windows and doors in existing or altered wall openings as work that requires a building permit. Window permit documentation may also require manufacturer information, Florida Product Approval numbers or NOAs, installation information, and plans identifying the affected openings.
A: No. The Florida Building Code defines the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone as Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Clearwater is outside the HVHZ, although some impact window products are approved for use both inside and outside that zone.
A: Look beyond the glass itself. The window's Florida Product Approval, allowable dimensions, design pressures, frame, installation instructions, anchoring requirements, and suitability for the specific opening can all affect the decision. A properly selected product still needs to be installed according to its approved specifications.
A: You will never need to hang plywood again. The state building code accepts our glass as primary storm protection. You get permanent safety without seasonal prep.
A: No. We keep measurements and installation within our own team. We also manage permits and inspections and provide a single point of contact, helping keep communication consistent from the initial measurements through completion.
