At A&J Windowhaus, we provide impact windows in Clearwater for homeowners and builders who want hurricane protection without giving up clean design or careful craftsmanship. Our family-owned company brings more than 30 years of European window-making experience, originally established in Berlin, Germany, to Florida installations.
Living in Clearwater means enjoying the Florida coast, but it also means preparing your property for strong winds, driving rain, and windborne debris during severe storms. The right window system can make a meaningful difference in how well the building envelope holds up when conditions become rough.
We handle measurements, permitting, installation, and inspections through our own team. That gives us control over details that matter—from choosing an appropriate product for the opening to making sure it is installed according to its approved specifications.
Impact windows provide a permanent form of opening protection designed to resist wind pressure and debris associated with severe storms. Unlike temporary storm panels that have to be installed before a hurricane, an impact-rated window remains in place year-round.
For Clearwater property owners, however, choosing an impact window involves more than selecting “hurricane glass.” Windows are tested and approved as systems. The frame, glazing, fasteners, anchoring pattern, opening size, wall construction, and required design pressure all affect whether a particular product is suitable for a specific opening.
That distinction becomes especially important near the coast. Two homes in the Clearwater area can have different installation requirements because of their height, exposure, building design, opening sizes, or proximity to open water.
Our approach is to measure first and match the window to the actual property instead of treating every opening as interchangeable.

Replacing windows in Clearwater generally requires a building permit. The City of Clearwater specifically lists replacement windows and doors among work requiring permits, and licensed contractors must submit window permit applications through the city’s online permitting system.
Clearwater’s published window and door permit requirements call for information such as manufacturer names, Florida Product Approval numbers or applicable Notices of Acceptance, installation requirements, and plans identifying the windows or doors involved in the project. Properties on barrier islands also have additional documentation requirements involving window location and component-and-cladding pressure calculations.
That paperwork is not separate from good installation. It helps establish whether the selected window is approved for the conditions where it will actually be used.
At A&J Windowhaus, we manage permitting and inspection coordination as part of our process. Homeowners and builders have one point of contact rather than being left to coordinate separately with installers, permit offices, and other parties.

No. Clearwater is not located in Florida’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, or HVHZ. The Florida Building Code defines the HVHZ as Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
That does not mean wind protection is unimportant in Clearwater or that any impact product can be installed anywhere.
Florida has separate wind-borne-debris and design-pressure requirements outside the HVHZ. The Florida Building Code defines wind-borne debris regions based partly on design wind speed and proximity to coastal exposure. Product approvals also specify where a product can be used and the loads it is designed to resist.
Our experience with both Florida Building Code requirements and more demanding HVHZ product standards helps us evaluate those distinctions without incorrectly treating every Florida property as though it were in the same wind zone.
We provide expert hurricane impact window and door installation across the following places:
St. Petersburg
Tampa
Clearwater

A strong product still needs the right fit.
Older Clearwater homes, remodeled properties, custom construction, and buildings with large openings can all present conditions that are difficult to address with rough measurements or a one-size-fits-all approach. Small differences in opening dimensions can affect clearances, anchoring, sealing, and the finished appearance.
We use laser measurements to document openings accurately before the windows are ordered. Our own installation team then completes the work rather than transferring the project to a subcontractor.
Keeping measurement and installation under one roof also reduces a common source of problems: one company measuring the openings and another crew arriving later with a different understanding of the job.
For homeowners, that means fewer handoffs. For builders, it creates a clearer line of responsibility when window specifications have to coordinate with the rest of the project.

A&J Windowhaus grew from more than three decades of window manufacturing and installation knowledge rooted in Berlin.
When Joe and Alex brought that experience to Florida, the goal was not to simply copy a European system and place it in a different climate. Florida properties have their own structural, permitting, weather, and installation requirements.
We combine the precision and attention to fit associated with our European background with products and installation practices suited to Florida conditions.
That balance is especially useful for property owners who want hurricane-rated windows but care about how the finished windows look and operate every day. Storm protection may be the reason for the upgrade, but the windows remain part of the home’s architecture long after hurricane season ends.

We manage the project from the first measurements through final inspection.
First, we review the property, openings, project goals, and conditions that could affect window selection. We then take precise measurements and determine which approved systems fit the application.
Once the products and scope are established, our team handles the required permitting documentation. After approval and product scheduling, our in-house installers remove the existing windows, prepare the openings, and install the new systems according to the required specifications.
We also coordinate the inspection process and keep the customer informed along the way.
For homeowners, this removes much of the uncertainty surrounding a major window replacement. For builders, it provides one team responsible for the window package instead of several disconnected vendors.

A: Not every Clearwater window project has identical opening-protection requirements. Requirements depend on the property, applicable code provisions, project scope, wind conditions, and approved methods of protection. We verify the requirements for the specific project rather than assuming every opening is the same.
A: Yes, window replacement is listed by the City of Clearwater as work requiring a building permit. The city also requires product and installation information as part of the application.
A: Not necessarily. An impact-resistant product may be approved for use outside the HVHZ without being approved for HVHZ use. Product approval documents identify limits of use, impact resistance, design pressures, and applicable installation requirements.
A: The decision should account for opening size, building height, exposure, required design pressure, wall construction, product approval, architectural preferences, and installation details. Accurate measurements and a property-specific review should come before ordering.
A: Our team manages permitting and inspection coordination. It's part of our installation process. Thus, keeping the project under one roof instead of requiring you to coordinate separately with other subcontractors.
